Countless houses and schools collapsed or were severely damaged in the Wenchuan earthquake. One of them was the Huaxianzi Primary School in Wangjiawan, Wuchuan village of Anding district. Seriously damaged in the earthquake, the school was in danger of collapsing at any time. The lives of all its teachers and students were at risk. In 2009, Oxfam launched a project to rebuild Huaxianzi Primary School, building classrooms, staff rooms and lavatories as well as repairing the school’s outer walls.

The new school building brings to the 220 students a safe learning environment. One student delightfully told Oxfam, “The old classrooms were made of mud. The new classrooms are so new and beautiful, providing us a very nice learning environment.” The vice principal said, “As the teachers now have their own living quarters, I am sure they will be willing to stay here and teach.”
