Organised by Oxfam Hong Kong, the annual Oxfam Trailwalker – the largest hiking fundraising event in Hong Kong – will take place from 15 to 17 November this year, with registration now open. Celebrating its 40th anniversary, this year’s theme is “40 Years, Stronger Together”. We are honoured that Oxfam Trailwalker 2024 has been recognised as a mega event in Hong Kong by the Government the second half of the year. We are also pleased to welcome Futu Securities as our new principal sponsor.

Collaborating with Society to Tell Good Stories of Hong Kong

The Government recently announced that Oxfam Trailwalker has been listed as a mega event in Hong Kong for the latter half of the year. Bernard Chan, Oxfam Trailwalker Steering Group Convenor, said in his speech: “We are honoured that the scale and social contribution of this event have been recognised by the Government. We believe this status will help tell good stories of Hong Kong and attract more international teams to participate. We have already invited teams from the UK, South Korea, and Spain. The success of Oxfam Trailwalker over 40 years is due to our collaboration with various sectors of society. Every year, many corporations and organisations form teams to participate. This year, Futu Securities has joined us as the principal sponsor, supporting poverty alleviation through action and fostering team spirit. We hope more companies and organisations will join us this year.”

Futu Securities has consistently supported Oxfam Trailwalker, with founder Leaf Li actively leading Futu's participation and support for the event since 2014. Speaking on behalf of Futu Securities International (Hong Kong) Limited today, Managing Director Daniel Tse said, "We are honoured to continue our journey with Oxfam Trailwalker in our new role as Principal Sponsor. The path to corporate growth, much like trailwalking, requires persistence and effort, aligning perfectly with our corporate culture. We hope to spread this spirit, encouraging the people of Hong Kong to develop resilience and teamwork."

Celebrating the 40th Anniversary with a 40-km Route

This year, Oxfam Trailwalker will start at Pak Tam Chung in Sai Kung and finish at Harrow International School Hong Kong in Tuen Mun. Participants must complete the 100-km MacLehose Trail and other connecting paths within 48 hours. To celebrate the 40th anniversary, a new 40-km "40th Anniversary Edition" had been introduced this year, starting at Pak Tam Chung and ending at Gilwell Campsite on Fei Ngo Shan (Kowloon Peak), allowing less experienced or new participants to join this event. We hope this new route will attract more newcomers.

Funds raised from this year’s event will support Oxfam’s various projects worldwide, including those aiding local grassroots communities and disaster victims affected by extreme weather. Kalina Tsang, Director General of Oxfam Hong Kong, said: “Oxfam Trailwalker originally began as a military training exercise for the Gurkha troops in Hong Kong, and has deep ties to Nepal. However, Nepal is extremely vulnerable to climate change and is among the top 10 most affected countries globally. We sincerely invite everyone to continue supporting Oxfam Trailwalker, extending its spirit and poverty alleviation efforts, and building a ‘World Without Poverty’ together.”

About Oxfam Trailwalker

Oxfam Trailwalker (previously called ‘Trailwalker’) began in Hong Kong in 1981 as a military training exercise for the elite Queen’s Gurkha Signals Regiment. In 1986, Oxfam Hong Kong was invited to co-organise the event and in the same year the event was open to the public. Along with the retreat of the Gurkhas in 1997, Oxfam Hong Kong took over the event. In 2024, Oxfam Trailwalker celebrates its 40th anniversary*, with the route starting at Pak Tam Chung in Sai Kung and finishing at Harrow International School Hong Kong in Tuen Mun. Teams of four must complete the 100-km MacLehose Trail and other connecting paths within 48 hours.

*The physical Oxfam Trailwalker event was suspended for three years; therefore, 2024 marks its 40th anniversary.
