Oxfam staff arrives the quake-stricken zone in Yunnan for assessment and relief work

The 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit Yunnan Province at 4:30 p.m. on 3 August 2014, with its epicenter at Longtoushan Township, Ludian Countyof Zhaotong City, leaving over 2000 people dead and injured, and nearly 1 million people affected. Oxfam took immediate response and arranged staff from Kunming Province to set off to the disaster-stricken areas today. Meanwhile, relief supplies from the emergency warehouse in Kunming are being dispatched to the two seriously affected counties.

Two teams of 5 staff  from the Kunming Office set off to worst-hit Ludian County (3 staff) and Qiaojia County (2 staff)  in the morning today to conduct immediate damage assessment. One of the teams arrived Ludian County at around 4 p.m. Large number of houses were seriously damaged and relocation is urgently needed.   Substantial temperature variation between day and night in rural Yunnan due to high altitude,  as well as the torrential rains  pose a serious challenge to survivors of the earthquake. Considering their immediate needs, we are dispatching relief items from the emergency warehouse in Kunming to the affected people, including 175 rolls of waterproof fabric (tarpaulins) for temporary shelter, 1000 torches and 2100 quilts. Oxfam staff will distribute the emergency supplies to the affected people after reaching the hard-hit villages and conduct on-site assessment in the quake zone in the coming few days.

Further humanitarian actions will be planned when more information is collected from the field.

In response to the needs of the affected people, Oxfam is planning to allocate HK$5 million for emergency relief and rehabilitation work in the Zhaotong Earthquake in Yunnan Province, and is launching a public appeal for the earthquake.
